Garden Chess Sets Are a Lot of Fun!
We have all seen garden chess sets in movies and on television, but few of us have actually seen them in person, let alone played one. These are very fun for adults and children alike and enable you to learn and play the game of chess in a completely different way. You don't need an enormous backyard in order to own these, and most of them are easy enough to transport that you can take them down to the local park.
What Are They?
If you have never played chess, then you might find garden chess sets a little scary at first. After all, they don't really allow you the ability to see the entire chess board. For that reason alone, many seasoned players feel disadvantaged when playing on a garden set. But, for new players or even for people who just want to get a different feel for the game, they can be a great learning experience that is a lot of fun.
Garden chess sets consist of a large mat, which is usually made from nylon, plastic, or vinyl, that is designed like a chess board. The size of the board ranges, but it can be as large ten feet across. The individual chess pieces are proportionately sized and are usually around two or three feet high.
Isn't It Hard to Play?
Yes! That's what makes it fun! Not only do you need to think about your game from a whole different angle, but you get to pick up those giant pieces and slide them around the board. But don't worry about the pieces being heavy. Although they are as large as a young child, they are much lighter and are usually made from hollow plastic. The average weight of an entire set can be anywhere from 60 pounds to 110 pounds, so you can see that the individual pieces are not that heavy, and the mat will roll right on up.
